Follow the locals! - Pay attention to how people paddle out in fact you can walk all the way to the edge of the reef about 100 yards then paddle thru the gap. If you vear to far to the left or right you'll scrape your fins and cut your hands. On the way in same deal or you'll end up on dry reef especially when it's pumping! As far as sharks. One overhead glassy summer day we were surfing with about 10 guy's - 4 brown when we saw a bunch of splashing 50' down the reef we all stared then up popped the biggest friggin fin, needless to say the whole line up bailed which is amazing in itself. Respect the brown boyz or you will get pounded!Toe

da good spot - Visited Maui from the south bay in July 06 with the wife and kids. My friend froza has been living there for 15yrs so he knows all the spots. Took me to this place, Shark Pit. Great set-up, kids can play in shore and the boys can surf outside. First impression paddling out, heavy reef, fins scrape the reef almost the whole way out. Cut my finger just paddling out. Being a mostly beach break kind of guy it made this seem real sketchy. But once me made it out the waves were killer. This day the waves were head high and bigger on the sets. Water was clear as glass and soooo warm. Brain coral everywhere. There was about 5 guys out, 3 were Hawaiins. One guy was throwing his Hawaiin status around and was going for every wave so I figured I wouldn't get much this day. I think my bro figured that out so he started talking to him and eventually broke the ice. The guy ended up beaing really cool after that and let us share the goods. Luckily I can surf so I didn't black ball myself. We surfed the left for 4 hours with a total of 5 guys plus 1 sponger. All I can say is that this wave is epic. Love the way it comes in and lines up. Not too hollow and not to powerfull, just right. If you ride the wave too far in you risk breaking your fins off. The right on the other side was good as well. A little more crowded though. Half-way through the session a school of box jelly came thru and tagged everyone in the lineup. Damn that shit stings. Looked like rope burn. However, the waves were so good and the vibe was great so everyone pretty much over looked the pain. I would recommend this place to visitors. Only breaks in summer so be prepared not to surf too much since Maui doesn't get lots of summer surf. I've been told. As always respect the locals and you will be kindly rewarded.

Brown Boyz? - Are you saying that every brown boy on Maui is local? Haaa! Either you are a tourist or another brown non-Hawaiian who uses the color of your skin to pose as a Hawaiian. In fact, only 50% of Maui's population today was born here. So don't fool yourself and others into thinking that everyone brown is a local. Respect everyone and you will be respected. Aloha
