Atmosphère

This place is really cool. Every year the Army Corps of Engineers pumps the shipping channel and dumps the sand right on the beach at second street. It usually make a great little sand point that break amazingly for the first few storms. Then the sand forms the sand bars that will last all through the season. There is a little problem when the swell comes from the north, the river channel sludge washes down the beach and you can get quite the sinus blockage after surfing there.

- How long have they been calling it Ursala's? Team Oatmeal Pie used to surf that place between the early 80's and mid 90's and I've never heard anyone call it Ursula's, we just called it Lyons. I remember as a kid in the mid 70's that used to be all breakwall through there, then the Corps of Engineers started dredging and filling the beach in from the Outpost down to that you guys call Ursula's. Caught it many, many times on the outer bar and rode it through the inside!! But the best shape always seemed to be on a strong NNE wind. It wouldn't get as big but nice and clean.

Great spot!!!! - This place breaks best on a strong Northwest wind. You need at least 20 mph winds, but when they are blowing from the NW this place is generally going off. Surprisingly enough this place has been surfed since the 60's, and was named after a woman who let the original Ursula's surfers spend the summer at her house there. Park at first street and walk west down the beach about 200 yards or so. The break sets up in three locations. The first break begins a short 20 yards from shore over a very shallow sand bar, not good for much other than boogie boarding or a couple short turns on a small day. A little farther out at about 80-100 yards is the second sand bar which breaks at about 3'+. The second break can be a lot of fun for a short or long board, and offers a nice mix of power and distance if you can ride it over the first break. Finally there is a third sand bar that will break on 4'+ days. This break is definitely the biggest and longest of the breaks. It will hold out to about 8', but at that point, the whole lake becomes a washing machine anyway. The wave on the third break will offer many different opportunities for surfers of all experience, from 250 yard long board rides to a very nice powerful peeling wave for the short boarders. On big days here the current can get very strong accompanied by a mean rip. Be careful, but use it to your advantage to make it through the break by paddling out the corner of park and lake street. Enjoy!!!
