riding the bus to makapuu - I am going to hawaii and i wonder if there's a bus going to makapuu from waikiki? I really want to bodyboard there.

Good fun, dat one - Howzit grom. Hell yeah, the current can be strong. Problem is many tourists get mesmerized by the scenery, and for some reason, many (not all), can handle the wave size, but aren't prepared for the rips and wave acceleration caused by the narrow bay. I don't care if anyone wants to risk their life, it's their own...just make sure relatives don't try to sue the city afterwards (our schools need funding). So many times at so many breaks/scenery points, has this happened.

Anyway, be careful here for a while. Someone just committed suicide (or maybe an accident) here. He fell or jumped or something off the cliffs above, and sharks were spotted feeding on his carcass. The sharks of the area may or may not now enjoy human flesh. Anyway, be careful.

Best place to body board! - I got a custom body board from the locals at Waimanalo, and then dropped off at Makapuu to test it out! Its a really great wave, that has so much to offer! Awesome place with kick arse scenery pity I was back on the plane that night to LA, but man it was a highlight. I am heading back there for a couple of days to get the feel for the place, but dam those locals can surf... unreal! The best in the world. watch out for that current into d rocks...

real scoop - not too fickle. Ive been in with a solid 6ft (10+ ft faces) swell and its not that knarly. Sometimes it can be somewhat gentle, like California point break, for its size. I rode the first waves of my life as a little grom here. Pros only when big my ass. There is plenty of wave to choose from in the right swell, just stay off the rocks. Almost always crowded. You guys dont know what the hell you're talking about.

Killa - I just got back from surfing here (Aug-05). The lifeguards don't care if you are surfing the outside part of the break-toward the point, away from the swimmers. If you want to ride the inside, then it has to be on a bodyboard. This spot has longer rides than Sandy's, and less swimmers. When the trades blow, it is more onshore than Sandy's, so it is rougher. The locals were cool, just don't drop in on them. Whenever you catch a wave and they don't drop in on you, thank them when you paddle back out. After that, usually they will treat you with the same respect you showed them.

makapuu - warning: if you see paul hayes in the water, immediately get out, because he bleeds a lot, which will attract the world's largest tiger sharks!

The finest shorebreak in the world. - I bodysurf Sandies and Makapu'u 3-5 time a week. Today (Tue. Jan 13, 2004) and it was beautiful. It was 2'-3' hawaiian style with an at times stiff offshore breeze and it was so hollow with barrels peeling all the way across from keiki corners to the rocks in front of the lifeguard tower. I've never had such long waves in my life. Makapu'u rocks.
