Surfing The North end of St Joe Island - In the sixties and early seventies we surfed St Joe in the spring and winter when the prevailing SE wind would blow 25 - 30 for several days. Our normal surf spot, Port Aransas, would get very large and choppy, occasionally breaking far offshore. On these days we would cross Aransas Pass and surf clean head high rights in the lee of the north jetty.

Go big or don't go at all - When the surf's big along the coast, this place is really sweet. Best on southeastern swells. On waist high or less days, don't bother. The paddle across the channel is about 20min and pretty scary during high traffic. Sometimes sympathetic boaters will give you a ride. Also can pay for ferry ride in Port A harbor. Island is un-inhabited, so accidents over here are a big deal. Help is a long way away.

Big wave spot? - You gotta see this spot when there's a huge overwhelming hurricane swell. If corpus is breaking 15 rows out, go to Port A and stand on the jetties on the south side and watch massive 20-30 feet waves break at the end of the north jetty (St. Joe Island). Surfed there during Ivan swell and it was HUGE. 25 feet far outide, almost end of jetties was double-triple overhead and long, long rights ...... Any other day its very weak and disapointing unless its well overhead.
