English (Traduisez ce texte en Français): This is the place where I learned to surf before stepping it up to Asilomar, Pac Grove, Carmel and other slots down PCH. Very lazy wave that's likely to closeout often but if you can grab is on a good day it's all yours.

Surfing there for 5 years solid and never had a case of localism or anything along the lines. Fires on the beach are OK and real nice sandy bottom you can walk out for a good 200 yards if you need to save your arms for the real paddling.

Have seen great whites in the lineup before so keep tabs on the vibe, but that should not be anything new for Cent-Cal surfers.

Patience - "Good" days at Del Monte (aka Casa Verd) are few and far between. The last "epic" session I had there was nearly 3-4 summers ago when there was a chainlink fence underneath the apartments. There use to be three distinct peaks there, but those sandbars are long gone. Like all things cyclic, those sandbars, or ones similar, will come back. When its good, it's an easy paddle out to the peak where you'll be with a few other surfers at most. Great vibe. When it's bad, it's choppy, windblown and massive closeouts that will pound you on the sand.

Every 5 Years - Every 5 years (give or take) mother nature grooms the waters of Del Monte beach and the surf gets... surfable. You get out and ride for 5 days in a row, then the winds shift, the tides change and Del Monte goes back to sleep. Closeouts and unrideable waves continue for another 5 years, but be patient and you will have 6 foot faces all to yourself.

Started out here - Had a great crew of friends that surfed this place together in the early-mid 1960's, Mike Garnero, John Davis, Mike Owens, Bruce Runyan, Rome Hutchings and a bunch of others. We started out skimboarding and riding surfmats (remember those things) and then we got real longboards. When it blew out we'd ski down the surrounding sand dunes on little boards we'd made. This was our home break and we all had a blast. I still surf (on the 3rd coast) and check out the Del Monte cam nearly every day, brings back great memories.
