Get a map and go! This spot, surprisingly is not mentioned, so I'm not giving directions. Its easy to get to so do your own homework. Windy and dusty! Be prepared to deal with sand in every crevase and a relentless side/off shore wind.

The Point and Razors are the most popular spots, but with a 4x4 and some adventure, you can find plenty of uncrowded waves.

The place faces the SE so the sun sets over the land which is kind of cool. Bring lots of water and sunscreen!

60 miles from baja 1 exit south of Guerrero Negro, around 100km. Road is being paved as you read this (2002), but will probably never be finished, so count on at least some streaches of washboard dirt road. Cruise into town and the point is pretty obvious south of the air strip.

 Informations supplémentaires

Abreojos means "Open Eyes" in Spanish. The breaks face east, so the wind turns offshore in the afternoon. Abreojos is a fully-funded fishing co-op. This means there's little crime and lot's of fish. Locals will trade/sell fresh fish. Real friendly -- so be cool and have fun!
+
Careful with the rocks here, it's not too sketchy, just don't get caught inside. It was 2m+ when I was there and looks like it holds plenty of size. Not a fast wave but has some juice.
+
The main wave is near these little beach cabana type things which are fairly visible. It is a bowly right take-off which peels for around 100 yds+ on a decent day. Waves at other sections of this giant point: near boat beach in town fast HOLLOW right breaks in pretty shallow water. I stood up in waist deep water here several times after pulling into the tube on an 8ft wave, so be aware. Also further down south of the main point a break near the lighthouse and 4 houses is what frequent travellers called Razors. a very fast VERY hollow right which breaks only on large swells, but generally doesn’t reach more than 7-8ft because it wraps so far down the point. Supposedly the waves can peel all the way into the large sandy bay, but beware as the waves, even at low tide, break nearly right on top of the rock reef/shelf which is of very unforgiving volcanic nature

Good waves and worth the journey.

Great! Very isolated, huge potential on good southern-hemis or hurricane swells. Friendly people, sparse crowds, we surfed w/ 7 people one day, good weather, good fishing.

Frrreezing cold , windy and pretty sketchy sea life... but some fun waves! - just got back from Abre. Waves were pretty fun with some barrelling ones in some seriously shallow and gnarly reef one day out of 8. The other days were either blown to bits by the relentless and ridiculous wind or only breaking at the point which was pretty mushy. not very crowded at all and the locals were really cool. However, we were chased out of the water by some circling sharks a couple times that by the size of the fins were probably about 8 foot according to a local diver we talked to, and most likely hammerheads. In fact they had caught a big one in the nets the same day we got a glimpse of over at the co-operativo in town. The days with the shark encounter they were gill netting outside of the point and there about a zillion birds feasting on the catch outside, so I'm guessing that all the action must've brought the big boys in. Nobody got hurt, so i guess it's no big deal, but pretty freaky none-the less. Also we got roughed up by a really large black seal lion as well. The thing was just charging for us, and my buddy that had dealt with that before was all" don't look it in the eyes!" and we managed to remain calm and it pretty much lost interest after we held our ground. Lots of sea life out there! The water was dang cold too. I didnt really believe what i had read about may and june having super cold water, but it was actually freezing and we spent the week in 3/2 fulls and booties. Was a fun trip though, and I"m glad i got out there.

Fun Times! - Scored it good for a week in late summer. Razors was breaking a few days but since I only had one board, I rode the point and 3 Poles which were big a few days. A guy the next camp down from us almost died of heatstroke (had to goto hospital). We had a shade tarp luckily which saved out butts! Lotsa wind, bugs, and saltwater mosquitoes at dusk. Caught yellowfin croaker every cast while surffishing from the beach too. Fun times!

Mini Rats - Just got back from Abre, good surf, and it was a lot of fun,, except for the mini rats. They are really small rats (Yes, Mini Rats not mice) and they come out of the dump in the evening and get into everything. You have to keep your tent zipped at all times or they get in and try to nest in your sleeping bag. We start hanging our food from our shade to keep them from eating it. We watched a swarm of about 30 that tore through a bag of tortilla chips in about 5 mins. We talked to the locals and they said there was an outbreak in the last few months. The good thing is that they only come out in the evening and disappear after an hour or two. But that hour or two is a total bummer. The locals now all have cats around there house to keep them away but the point is still wide open.
