From Guatemala City drive south to Iztapa, take a ferry across the river to Monterrico, drive east on a dirt road for about 20km, and a pick a sandbar that peaks best. There is a turtle and crocodile sanctuary nearby. Hawaii is the actual name of the village.

Informations supplémentaires
Best in the morning or sometimes in the late afternoon, winds blow straight offshore almost every morning for 3-4 hours. Lots of fun peaks, with lots of tube sections, powerful rips and strong currents. Park your car somewhere in town or an empty lot if you can find one.

Atmosphère
Every person I met in this town had a warm friendly vibe. Even though the surf is not as good as the real Hawaii, the people definitely have the aloha spirit. According to the local fishermen, I was the first person to ever surf this spot, but who knows? I never saw another surfer anywhere near the region. This is a typical beach break, but the sandbars are definitely better here than anywhere else in the region, lots of fun peaks that barrel to the right and left, perfect with the morning offshores. The water is unbelievably warm but the sand is like pavement, very hard and hot. Srong rips and currents, I broke my leash on a small 2-3 foot day!

Général
Coming from SoCal, I would compare the quality and power to El Porto or IB. It probably would close out on anything bigger than 8 feet, but who knows, I never got a chance to see anything over 4 feet. Very hard spot to find, but almost worth the effort, since the majority of the beaches in Guatemala are too steep with only shore break. Beautiful river park north of the beach filled with mangroves, cocos, tropical birds and monkeys. Potentially good surf at the rivermouth, but I never made it over there. Best season probably spring, summer and fall since it faces south. I would say to respect the locals, but you are almost guarunteed to be the only one out.

Las lisas - Whoever added that photo of las lisas, how far is that spot from Hawaii? I heard from some fishermen that the river mouth to the south had a nice wave, he also warned of crocs.
