Tavarua ! - ! - - so we intended to go to Wilkes Passage given the chances of surfing Restaurants seamed nil. We dropped a couple off there who had been lucky enough to have their names drawn from a hat that morning and could surf the perfect 3 - 6ft Rests! I was totally miffed and had to go to Wilkes by myself... or so I thought, the boat driver got on the radio to the Tavarua guys and suddenly i was allowed to surf! 10 bucks, a bunch of waivers and a little boat ride later - I'm there. That place has the best shaped wave and the take off is easy - if you don't mind looking at a few coral heads just 3m in front of you! It is hollow and shallow and the reef really bites. Everything you read about it being a place to STAY on your board is true - if you fall off and hit the bottom, you will hurt yourself. If you want to surf it - you have to call Tavarua from the surrounding resorts and put your name in a hat just in case someone else who is on the list cancels OR pay the $2500US for a week there and just surf it everyday.CheersJim
