Baler spring 2011 - Made it to Baler in mid march hoping for some classic tubes, but wind was onshore, strong and cold for three days straight. Some swell but a guy there said the weather had been like that for 3 weeks. Muddy water nothing like the pic posted here, silty brown sand beach..., a bit lacking in tropical luster and balmy water compared to the southern philos...

Cool little town and not so bad by bus from Manila.
(about 7-8 hours aircon bus) Watch out for the food at the main beachfront cafe...nice people but got food sick there.

Non surfing locals very cool and laid back.

Karaoke Girl bars along the beachfront to the right facing the sea past the nightclub for when surf is down.

This is still surf season. I heard its dead flat in summer. Like any surfing in the Philos gotta time it right. This time I was unlucky...

Baler surfing. - Went in the off season and scored a few fun little days. { Bus is a pain in the ass and about 7 SLOW!! hours from Manila and approx $8 USD }
Now heading back and should be better, it is a mellow place, nice and relaxing, the waves are pretty average apart from Cemento reef which is a cracking wave, on the whole a nice place, stunning scenery and a friendly small town. Great to replace 8c water in our Winter to boardies there! Small hotel at the break has decent rooms and good food. { Haggle for room rates especially if staying a while.} 7/10 The whole place overall but the night life is crap if you are into that.
If you wanna just surf and then chill out then this could be the place........
{PS they have some new cheap Greg Webber boards for sale there, Greg visited and left boards bur seems like they cannot sell them, maybe too much for the locals? Buy a new board and leave your old one for the local kids maybe?

the hand that feeds - just a note to let world surf travelers about baler.great fun waves and the people are awsome all accept a small group of local tryhards that have never surfed anywhere else and paddle around visiting surfers everytime and then drop in on them when they finally get a wave.i saw yesterday at rivermouth an expro from aussie get bpaddled around 10 times then droped in on and when he disaproved he was harrased. to these people you DO NOT surf that good at all this guy is mellow and has charged some of the best waves on the planet so next time you mistake your greedyness for abality consider that the economy of baler relies alot on surfers visiting baler and though you guys probley sit on you ass all day hotel owners and cafes ect rely on people like these to keep baler economy healthy.and to the long haired stoned kook that harrased our brother get a job save your pasos and surf the planet as you need to find aloha and lucky for you our buddy kept his cool he kick boxers even better than he surfs. to all other residents of baler you are truelly peacefull awsome people with zero ego that will be welcome at our local beaches any time when in aussie. aloha...

Baler is easy to get to now - I see most people here have not been to baler recently... the last comment was correct you could get to baler in 3 to 4 hours. Rough road's gone. I know a surfer there who is quite known everywhere. His name is OKOY and he owns a surf shop right at the sabang beach break called the Mahdox Surf Shop. Google them. He's the best person to talk to. and a very nice guy. I believe he's a sponsored rider of Ripcurl.

I've done the trip twice in 3-4 hrs - there is also a small flight for 50$ us that takes about .30 minutes to get to baler.

Baler Adveture - It's a long and bumpy ride to get to Baler, Aurora. It would take you more or less 8 hours. They are often hit by storms that's why they are blessed with consistent waves, like Daet. Sabang Beach is ideal for beginners. Cemento Reef, on the other hand, is strictly for experienced surfers or for the "kamikazees". Nonetheless, Baler is a surfing paradise. The locals at first are very aloof, but once you get to know them, everything would be alright. They speak Tagalog purely, and you'll find words that are amusing. Surf boards are difficult to find, though. Rentals aren't usually available because even the locals themselves, lack resources. Nevertheless, the natives are really talented surfers. They possess such world-class talents. However, the grommets (real young surfers) are intimidating! They could paddle faster! But lo and behold, Baler is worth the 8-hour bumpy ride. Just make sure that you don't lose your board on your way there:).

MID-APRIL - are there any spots in the LUZON regions that's surferble? during the month of APRIL

De drewbergmtk@yahoo.com , 20-02-2006

Its a trek - I thought I read somewhere that the ride from Manilla to Baler is 3-4 hours, but it is in fact 6-8 hours, even in a private car. An SUV is ideal for the many bumpy roads. Once in Baler, the beach break is pretty fun, but not very powerfull. You need to take a tricycle "taxi" to the better breaks. Ask around where the best breaks are and the locals will point you in the right direction. If you can spare some surf supplies (wax, leashes, shorts, etc), the locals will appreciate it.
