new locals - yea to all those older guys from the 80's, there is a new group of kids out at BP and i'm one of them and dont worry we are taking good care of the place. i go out to blind pass on almost every swell, and it is super powerful.
the biggest i have ever seen it is about 6 foot during the hurricanes that came through in 08 and it's so good!
and i was wondering what these "dog bones" are?

Aggro Locals - I still love this break, the only problem I've ever had there was during Gustav last year ('08). We had a ton of these rude and arrogant longboarders from Pompano beach come over to our backyard and they were snaking everyone, with the exception of one mellower older dude in the crew. I swiftly made it apparent that I was not going to stand still and get snaked by these unshaven yuppies, and when I dosed it back to them, there wasn't so much as a furrowed brow shot back at me, as they knew they had overstepped there boundaries in an unfamiliar place far from their highrises.

help a limey - hi,

can anyone help...?

me and my girlfriend are looking to stay in sanibel/captiva this march.

living in london i don't get the chance to surf that often so having discovered there is a possibility in sanibel i'm feeling pretty happy about ...i doubt my girlfriend will be quite as happy when she finds out.

what i need help with is:

Can anyone recommend an area of either sanibel or captiva to stay at that would be a good location for a beach that is surfable ?

Also, Can anyone recommend a surf shop that would hire boards ?

Would be great if someone could give me some inside knowledge it will be much appreciated

peace

russ

First True Locals at Captiva - That is classic to see that list of Characters! They are the legit guy's from back before I started surfing. How about Dave Palmer, Derrick,Devin, RS,Danny Tomasi, Chris Genitils, Paul Valenti,Cheyene,Scrawny Ronny, Pistol Pete, Fat Mike, Cracker John etc... those where the second group of guy's that surfed the Pass and the Hut...that was right around the time they dredged & "renurished" the beach and buried the dog bones and basically ruined the waves.
Every spot has it's day and I would be stoked to surf Captiva on one of those days again. Stoked to see your post on here Joe.Hope you are doing well.

Captiva - Surf - Captiva is one of those places that can be very fun under the right conditons. The water gets deep very close to shore and produces a steep and hollow wave.

But as mentioned by many, it doesn't break very often. The only time it's really rideable is right after a strong cold front or when there is a tropical storm in the Gulf.
But when it does break, it is a powerful wave for its size. As mentioned, it can be very steep and hollow. I've gotten some really nice tube rides (short but nice) on the north side of blind pass.
And a couple years ago, we had hurricane after hurricane move into the Gulf of Mexico. That summer/fall I caught a lot of really good waves out on Captiva Island.

But it's definately not a spot to just show up and hope for sure. It's a spot you hit when you know its breaking. Check the weather and boey reports and hit it while it's on. Because most of the time, it's flat or too small to ride.

I also forgot Jerry Rice - Jerry was part of the crew and he ripped harder than all of us. He did the first Air back in Martin Potter times. Lots of love and respect for Jerry.

Captiva - Let me get this straight.....you are CLAIMING captiva? How's that working out for you?

First True Locals at Captiva - I grew up in FM and went to high school at Cypress Lake and graduated in 87, I started surfing in 83 and at the time nobody surfed Captiva except us. When we used to go out to Captiva people in FM used to laugh at us with our boards on our cars. There was a tight group of us. Me, James Martinez, Aaron Brown, John Symanski, Bryon Stout,Scott Cornelius,Scott Grippits,Billy Babick,Ryan Seal, and Tod Seal. We were the ones that surfed there every storm and every cold front. This was when there was little to no beach, there was little jetties every 200 -300 yards and yes there was the famous dogbones that would impair you if you messed with them, I seen Kooks get wrapped around them with there leash and almost drown. The guys I grew up surfing there with are still freinds and we all still surf. The waves are not good there by any means but thats what we had and we loved the place. Those were the days of my youth, when I skipped school to surf, quit jobs to surf, left girls sitting on the beach in cold rainy shitty weather. Yes we were the first locals there and yes we protected it from people from Naples and Venice, if you acted like a kook or were disrespectful, you wouldn't come back PERIOD. I remember reading surfer mag and dreaming of riding real waves for more than 3 seconds. We made many east coast trips to the inlet and then to Costa Rica when Hermosa was a cattle field. Then some of the guys moved to the east coast and some to cali. I miss my friends that I grew up surfing with because now some of us are gone. Its been a long time since I have surf Captiva but I still think about the place, not because the waves were good but because of the people and the memories. Some of the guys I mention still go there and surf.
