help please - moving to luanda next month ...how far is ambriz beach from the town? possible to surf without wetsuit?

Great Waves - I spent about a month last year in Angola during a military medical exercise called medflag. I grew up surfing in Florida and gave it up when I joined the Air Force. The waves in Cabo Ledo were 3-6 feet for a week. We convoyed to Ambriz and the waves were a solid 6 foot for almost two weeks! Not sure if that is typical, but sure was awsome to wake up too every morning. Got lots of pictures but never got to surf!

I was working in Luanda five years ago and visited Ambriz for long weekend. I must say that Ambriz is one of the most beautiful places on Earth!!Its really shame that I didnt have my surfboard with me otherwise I would probably stay there forever:-)

Good memories - With all due respect to the previous messenger.... I surfed in Angola for about 1.5 years and am now in Namibia, and never saw a great white in either of these countries. I traveled throughout Angola, yes the roads are not good, and the landmines only become a problem if you go offroad, and only inland, not so much along the coast. The swell obviously picks up in winter, and summer days might be flat, but the country is so beautiful, that having to wait for a wave can't be the worst thing happening. I haven't surfed in Ambriz, but was there one day when the swell was absolutely enormous. Some friends said they surfed Cabo Ledo that day, with overhead barrels from far behind the point. These are the kind of places/ countries still to be explored, and it should be enjoyed while spending time there. I miss every second I spent in Angola….

Whatever - Talk about a scam

Angola is still on its knees following a massive civil war that has been going on for years. There is nothing setup in terms of tourism - let alone anything beneficial for the local population. Waves or not - landmines and armed bandits don't sound extremely tempting.

Besides, there are great whites all over the coast from ZA to Namibia to Eq Guinea - they'd love a tasty tourist!
