- I was chased out of the water by screaming, ultra-threatening "locals" before even catching a wave and even though I made a point of keeping a big distance from "the pack" (only 7 or 8 guys). It was the most violent, unpleasant experience of my 50 years of surfing. I was bodysurfing (pretty unthreatning) with a helmet on (obviously a bit freaky for them). Apart from being threatened with raised fists and sharp board charges, they shouted "get the fuck out of here, fuck off back to your country (NZ) you stupid clown" etc etc. Behaviour like that on dry land could get you in jail, but in the water these guys feel safe. Somebody should teach these guys a lesson.

- I surfed the place for a week with 2 others in October 1986. The swell peaked at a solid 12', with a super easy paddle out via the river mouth. Definitely high quality sand spitting barrels, unless something has changed.

- How do you usually paddle into the peak? From the right or from the left side of the river? Thx!

Localism - The problem with Rodiles is that localisms think that they have the best wave in the world.
It is not a bad wave, but any way, there are much better waves. Nothing to do with Mundaka for example. Every time I see some kind of comparison sincerelly it makes me laugh at.
Most of the localisms are not really good at surfing, so they need doing things like this.

rodiles rules - Your report on Asturias is basically ok except for Rodiles left.
Do a little research and you will find out that rodiles is not just the best wave in Asturias
And the second best of Spain right after mundaca , but definitely one of the top ten waves in Europe.
3 stars is an insult to a world class hollow left for the experienced tube rider.

RODILES LOCALS = SCREAMER GIRLS - I invite every surfer in Europe to come to Rodiles cause IS THE MOST PATHETIC,RIDICULOUS AND FEARFUL LOCALISM I EVER SEEN...they try to intimidate you by shouts, insults and threats bur, believe,i know them and y know the behabiour of that king of crew and they are SO FERAFUL to touch you,so,please,IS A CUESTION OF PERSONAL RESPECT SO GO THERE,PADDLE EVERY WAVE AND FUCK THEM ALL.....HAVE FUN GETTING BARRELED ....cause all they are going to do is barking...guau guau...GO AND SURF RODILES MEN,ridiculous localism ever...

save rodiles teach/ the locals a lesson - It seams that the famed wave at Rodiles is in jepardy. I think it is a Karmic response to the stupidity of localism. I hate to see a wave destroyed by developers, But, worse, I hate to see a wave riding experience ruined by the selfishness of "locals". I will donate to help save Rodiles, But the stupid fuck locals need to get a clue that surfing is a world wide tribe, and embrace traveling surfers with welcoming arms. If you can't learn to behave yourselves then you deserve to have your wave wiped from this earth.

here's the tip: - if you wanna surf rodiles:
0. learn spanish. at least a bit.
1. have a drink in one of gijon cidre bars, get to know some gijon locals, surf with them a few times, become friends with them.
2. ask them about rodiles.
3. go with them to rodiles.
4. go during the week
5. Experience the dawn of the day in the water... don't wait for the sun to rise.
6. go there when low tide is around 11 o'clock. by the time you go in it won't be perfect, but it will increase shortly after. If low tide is earlier, more people will have a morning session.
6. If you did everything right, you and your new friends are the only persons in the water by now, enjoy this situation, it won't last.
7. With some good fortune , the locals will arrive one by one. greet everyone with a smile, show respect, the usual thing. If your new friends know some of the arriving locals try for a little chat; good subject: the beautyness of the spot. Bad subject: Localism.
8. Back when you were alone in the water, you were able to start your wave at the peak. Now that some locals have arrived, try to respectfully keep your position. don't fight for waves, don't annoy people by sillypaddling but don't give up on the good waves...yet. the worst thing that can happen is that you give up on a wave that was perfect for you because of some local who paddles at the same wave, both of you abort, the wave goes unridden. If this happens too often (like...two times) the locals will start to surf every wave you paddle at.
9. at a certain point (at least on a good day...well there's rarely such thing as a bad day in rodiles) you'll nevertheless notice, that you don't get waves anymore. that means you did everything right. more locals have arrived, but they did not hassle you or kick you out. They just take every wave. at this point paddle away from the peak and surf the waves that noone catched before you. they'll still be great, and there'll be enough.
10. if you feel that you annoy someone - be it just one local - or if no empty waves come to you get out at once.
11. repeat steps 3 to 11. after a few times you might even be allowed to come alone and surf the peak if it's not to crowded.

Relaxed surf - Really consistent surf both at the river mouth and the cliff end of the beach. Had heaps of waves when it was small and reasonable size with local and travelling surfers . And yes the spanish keep very spanish hours for everthing including surf so its easy to avoid crush hour.

Rodilles outstanding! - I'm portuguese, and I've been last week at Rodilles, with
10 local surfers. I've respected then, and they let me
get my waves you no problems. I got great waves that
morning, deep tubes, etc, is was a great session.
I think the rivality of the comments above make no sense,
and only creates anger between the surfers.
Foreigners must always respect the locals. If they do,
most locals will let then get great waves, and everybody
will enjoy a good surf.
