Surfing and traveling around Peru - 2008/10/23 12:29 Whats up everyone! So me and a buddy are heading down to Peru in late November and are hitting up some surf. We'll be flying into Lima around Nov 18 and wanted to go up to the Huanchaco area or Mancora area for 5-6 days.

The flights to Trujillo are cheaper and faster so that's where we were thinking but what's everyone's opinion... If you had 5-6 days to surf in Peru where would it be?

And is it easy to get around by yourself or do you recommend a surf guide at all?

Any advice is appreciated. Thx!

Re:Surfing and traveling around Peru - 2008/10/23 16:04 Trujillo airport is right by Huanchaco - so thats really easy. From there you can bus or even get a taxi to Puerto Malabrigo (Chicama), and then another hr north is Pacasmayo which is in many ways better than Chicama (it gets more swell).

Mancora is several hours north - probably a whole day by bus. Look at flying from Lima to Talara or Tumbes - these are much closer to Mancora. Lobitos is nearer Talara and is wicked.

STill if you only have 5-6 days you really shouldn't spend half of it travelling - the easiset option is to head just south of Lima - to the Punta Hermosa area and just stay there - there is a bunch of quality spots (Cabbaleros and Senoritas, Punta Rocas, Pico Alto, Penascal etc...) all right there.

Don't miss the ceviche )

Re:Surfing and traveling around Peru - 2008/10/24 03:37 Yeah I heard from someone else to stay around Pacasmayo since its more consistent and if Pacas gets 8' or more then head down to Chicama. I also heard the town around Pacasmayo is a cool little surf town... or is Trujillo or Huanchaco a better (more fun) town to stay in?

Re:Surfing and traveling around Peru - 2008/10/24 05:24 Hi,

For 5/6 days, you could:
- as you say try it in Chicama or Pacasmayo (you need luck with the swell). Incredible waves but not so consistent.
- check out the South Lima zone that has nice waves too, is very consistent and has plenty of facilities. Can stay in Punta Hermosa and from there do Caballeros / Señoritas / La Isla / Punta Rocas. Then move south to Cerro Azul (on the way, stop by Puerto Viejo). If you have the right swell and some money, it is worth surfing San Gallan.
- Fly to Talara and stay in Lobitos (4 waves to surf there).

Have a nice trip.
