Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/05/22 19:04 Hi guys
I'm gonna start a long surf trip to Middle- and South America in August. I don't know where to start. I actually wanted to start in Costa Rica, 'cause I'd like to just take some Spanish lessons, surf & chill for the first few weeks. But lots of people & statistics tell me that it is too rainy during that time. On the other hand there are not a lot of tourists then, what I also prefer. Does someone of you have experience during that time? I heard the surf is good in August/September, is that true? Or do you have any ideas where I could start?

Thanx!

Cheers from Switzerland

Re:Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/06/06 07:21 actually as north you go in Costa Rica less rain you will find by august plus if you'r lucky the "verano de san juan" will show up by usually july and august wich means off shore winds and plenty of sun, always talking about Tamarindo area.
for tamarindo waves gallery check www.bananasurfclub.com also for a budged accommodation.

Re:Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/06/24 10:37 Actually all of Central America, and a majority of South America will be in the rainy season. Do you melt in the rain!? It is so humid it doesn't matter anyway. You sweat your wet, it rains your wet. It really doesnt affect surfing anyway. Mornings are usually always sunny, storms roll-in in the late afternoon. It really wont "rain" on your parade of travel and surf in Costa, and Central America. South America if your in the tropics it will be rainy as well. Goes with the territory.
PS, Tamarindo/tamagringo sucks, so do the waves.

Re:Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/06/24 14:37 The waves will be going off, the beach breaks will be mackin' and it will be hot. The crowds will be heavy since all the east coast boyz will be spending their stimulus checks to get out of their flat spells and pull into some pits. And it will be wet, and humid, but who cares your going surfing right? Go and have some fun, and be really careful if traveling to Nicaragua & ECSPECIALLY--- El Salvador. They like to target rental cars. Be smart, dont flash cash or expensive tech toys, and talk to you doc about getting some Sipro or other med for when you get sick from the water (it will eventually happen) Costa is pretty well traveled now so you should have a great time and there are some hot chica ticas there to share a few frio cervasas with hombre--pura vida

Re:Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/06/26 00:40 I went with a few buddies to Playa Hermosa in Costa a few years ago at the beginning of August and it was double overhead, it sometime rained in the afternoon, but it was by far the best time of my life: good people, good food, good waves, and good brew...not much more a man can ask for. Check out BRISA DEL MAR, the owner is really cool and its reasonably priced, right on the beach.

Re:Surfing Costa Rica Aug - Oct ??? - 2008/07/10 05:33 that is rainy season, october you're getting into the end of the season. Tropical storm usually fire just off the coast of CR during that time as well. they can get some seerious swells during that time. I'm going back in November, surfs not the best, but it's there, i just like going there at that time of year, everything still green, it's hot, and i love to watch the evening thunderstorms...cheers.
